Programme of events 2026-2027.
The Birmingham Medal Society meets on the first Thursday of each month at The Holiday Inn, Kidderminster Road, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, B61 9AB. Each meeting is different and provides a wide range of subjects for medal collectors and historians in all areas. The meetings begin at 1900h with the formal start at 1930h. Members may also wish to meet in the bar area from 5.00pm onwards for a meal or drink.

Thursday 6th August 2026 - Lt Col Harold Henry Merton DSO. Roger Bragger will take a detailed look at Lt Col Merton whose medals he holds in his collection. An interesting and intriguing story of this decorated soldier who was a PoW for most of World War II.
Thursday 3rd September 2026 - Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Fire Medal. Tony Jones will once again look in detail at a topic close to his heart.
Thursday 1st October 2026 - Hamish Mahaddie. Pilot, Pathfinder & Air Fleet Procurer. Steve Mills will take a detailed look a the life of this interesting character.
Thursday 5th November 2026 - The Drummond Lecture - First World War POW's on the Western Front. Guest speaker Richard Lloyd from the Western Front Association will cover this area of WWI that receives little attention.
Thursday 3rd December 2026 - The Experiences of the Voluntary Aid Detachments 1916-19. Paul Handford MBE will look at this fascinating area of World War I. The Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) was a voluntary unit of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom and various other countries in the British Empire. The most important periods of operation for these units were during World War I and World War II. Although VADs were intimately bound up in the war effort, they were not military nurses, as they were not under the control of the military. Paul will as always draw from his own extensive collection to illuminate the presentation.
Thursday 7th January 2026 - Recent Acquisitions. An opportunity for members to show off their latest medallic acquisitions. Always an interesting evening and one full of surprises.
Thursday 4th February 2027 - Two Chargers for the Price of One. 21st Chargers at Omdurman. Hugh Vaugh will talk about the famous cavalry charge by the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, during the Sudan campaign. Ordered to harass retreating Mahdist forces, 400 British cavalrymen unwittingly charged into a concealed ambush of over 2,000 Sudanese warriors hidden in a deep gully. Hugh will use medals from his own collection to illustrate the talk.
Thursday 4th March 2027 - Efficiency Medals and their Clasps. Introduced by Phil McDermott and opportunity for members to bring examples from their own collections to talk about following his presentation.
Thursday 1st April 2027 - Annual General Meeting / Recent Acquisitions. Following the formal business of the evening an opportunity for members to show off their latest medallic acquisitions or to talk about a specific group of medals they have. Always an interesting evening and one full of surprises.
Thursday 6th May 2027 - Groups With Foreign Awards. Martin Harrison and Mark Platt will introduce this subject followed by members who can bring groups to talk about from their own collections that include a foreign award.
Thursday 3rd June 2027 - The Air Force Medal. Introduced by John Scott. Following John’s introduction members may bring and show groups from their own collections containing an AFM.
Thursday 1st July 2027 - Modern Medals Post Falklands - Introduced by Dave Walters. Dave will talk about modern medal groups all post Falklands War in 1982. Members may bring examples from their own collections to show and talk about following Dave’s introduction.
